Greece achieves record coverage rate of power demand through renewable energy sources

Greek renewable energy sources (RES) achieved a double record on September 14, meeting the highest rate of demand both nationally and at European level that day, according to Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE) data.

Specifically, RES (wind, solar) covered 51 pct of electric power demand on Sept. 14, a rate rising to 57 pct if large hydroelectric power plants are included.

In addition, data provided by WindEurope – representing over 400 businesses and agencies in wind power – showed that aeolic sources in Greece covered over 40 pct of power demand, the highest percentage across Europe for Sept. 14.

As Environment & Energy Minister Kostis Hatzidakis has announced, a new draft bill will simplify licensing to RES investors and other procedures, and include permits for hybrid units that combine RES with energy storage.

Secretary General Alexandra Sdoukou has revealed there are currently 11,000 applications for RES units that will produce a total of 76 GW, a volume nearly ten-fold the power needed to meet the 2030 RES target.
